2025 Began With Temperature Record, Despite Influence Of La-Nigne

January 2025 became the warmest month in the history of observations, despite the arrival of the atmospheric phenomenon of La-Ninie, characterized by a decrease in the temperature of the Pacific Ocean. This was stated by the Director of the Center for Research Change Climate and Bosphorus Policy (Brozichi) of the University Professor Levent Kurnaz.

According to the European Climate Climate Service, Copernicus, January 2025 became the warmest in the history of observations. The average global air temperature was 13.23 degrees, which by 0.79 degrees exceeds the indicators for January from 1991 to 2020.

The average air temperature in January was 1.75 degrees above the pre -industrial level, and 18 out of the last 19 months, including January, were 1.5 degrees above the pre -industrial level.

The last 12 -month period (February 2024 – January 2025) was 0.73 degrees higher than the average for the period from 1991 to 2020 and 1.61 degrees higher than the average in the pre -industrial period from 1850 to 1900 .

The average temperature of the sea water in January 2025 was 20.78 degrees, which is 0.19 degrees below the record set in January 2024.

The probability of a record in February is low

In an interview with an anadol correspondent, Professor Levent Kurnaz said that the weather phenomena of El-Nigno and La-Nini have an impact on the temperature of the Pacific Ocean.

Kurnas noted that when the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean becomes warmer, the average global temperature also rises.

“January 2025 was the warmest January in the history of mankind: 22 out of 31 days of this month became the hottest days in our history. It was a little surprising and unexpected for scientists, since the Pacific Water in January was cold, but the average The land temperature was high, ”he said.

Kurnaz indicated that the temperature in January exceeded the expectations of scientists, being much higher than the average value.

At the same time, according to the professor, the probability of setting new temperature records in Turkey, especially in February, is small, taking into account the air temperature before the end of the month, which, as expected, will not increase.

Kurnaz noted that, despite the fact that at the beginning of the year the Pacific Water was cold due to the effect of La-Nigne, in the first month of the year the temperature record was broken.

“Therefore, if in the coming months, La-Ninhi turns into El Nino, that is, the water will get warmer, that is, the probability that we will really observe much higher temperatures. However, it is not easy to give some forecasts regarding There is no strong influence of La-Ninia, but there is no increase in air, it seems to be accompanied by La-Ninhi until September-October. .
