Located in the Western Turkish province Izmir Antique city of Ephesus will be again connected to the sea thanks to the launch of a new channel by the end of 2022. This was reported to the Sabah newspaper.
According to the message, the project to create an ancient Canal of Ephesus was launched to return the city lost access to the sea. According to the Minister of Rural and Forestry of Turkey Bekira Pakdemirli, “by the end of 2022, the world-famous ancient city of Ephesus will reunite with the Aegean Sea after 2,500 years old using a new channel.”
The project will be implemented in several stages. According to the results of the first, the entrance to the channel will be reconstructed and pier and wave conveyed are built. The second stage includes the reorganization of the territory from the Highway Izmir – Kusadasi to the port of Ephesus in accordance with the historical structure. Thus, after the completion of the project, tourists will be able to attend the ancient city of Ephesis not only on land, but also by sea.
Ephesis in 2015 officially became part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year in Ephesus, located in Selchuk, Izmir Province near the coast of the Aegean Sea, arrives several thousand bus buses with foreign and local tourists. Some are going here to visit the house of the Virgin Mary – one of the main places of the pilgrimage of Christians.
