During the operation against former members of the revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), 27 militants were neutralized. This was stated by President of Colombia Gustavo Petro.
In a statement on the Platform X Petro, he said that the operation was carried out in the Amazon region against FARC fraction militants called the Central General Staff (EMC).
“During operations against the fronts of Ivan Mordisco, 31 rifles were seized, 27 people were neutralized, including those killed and detained during clashes,”- follows from the message.
The President noted that the operation dealt a serious blow to drug dealers, and also thanked the army for successful actions.
EMC group, which is headed by Nestor Gregorio Vera, known under the name “Ivan Mordisco”, has never joined a peace agreement and is considered the central General Staff Farc.
According to the local press, EMC has more than 3,500 members, of which 2 180 are armed militants.
The group acts in the West, in the center and east of Colombia, as well as in Venezuela and Ecuador, financing itself due to drug trafficking, smuggling and extortion.
After the start of peace negotiations with EMC in September 2023, the parties reached an agreement on a three -month truce on October 16 of the same year.
In 2024, the truce was extended for another 6 months, however, after the EMC attack on local leaders in the Kauk region on March 16, 2024, the government announced the suspension of a truce with militants.
The peace agreement, which put an end to the 53-year-old armed conflict between the state and FARC, was signed on November 24, 2016 in the Historical Theater “Colon” in Bogota Ex-President Huan Santos and Farc leader Rodrigo Londono.
