In the province of equator in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), at least 50 people were killed as a result of tipping the boat on the Congo River.
This was announced by the head of the Red Cross of the region, equator Maitr Kolomba Mampunya in an interview with the National TV channel RTNC.
According to him, the tragedy occurred near the city of Mayita.
In the region, search and rescue work continues.
The authorities do not exclude that the number of victims may increase.
Due to the lack of asphalt roads in the DR Congo, rivers and lakes remain the main means of movement.
Such incidents most often happen in the season of heavy rains and are associated with the technical malfunction of the vessels, as well as with their overloading passengers and cargo.
