French and Australian experts have seen signs of a new continent emerging in the Indian Ocean, according to an article published in Terra Nova magazine.
Previously, it was believed that new continents can only appear on the borders of land and ocean. Continental rocks are too coarse and oceanic rocks are soft and can fold. The latter complicates the formation of the earth’s firmament, reports “Moskovsky Komsomolets”.
Scientists see that continents can form on the oceanic plateau. In the Indian Ocean, accumulations of magma have been discovered after volcanic eruptions. The composition of the rocks is similar to that of the continental. This means that dry land may soon form here. Now on the site of the future continent is the Kerguelen archipelago. The softest rocks in the ocean can expand it.
