BBC News writes that the idea of researchers is to “deceive” the virus, issuing separate protein molecules for real cells. So that they blocked the virus, not allowing it to multiply. It is known that the virus is attached to the Ace2 protein located on the surface of certain types of cells and performing the role of the receptor. So, scientists at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia created a raid with a high content of this protein, which is also found in the cells of many plants.
clinical trials on people have not yet been carried out, but in laboratory conditions, the method showed quite good results. Even 5 mg of protein in chewing gum was enough to significantly reduce the penetration of the virus into the cells. And 50 mg reduced its activity by 95%.
BBC notes that it is too early to celebrate the victory over the pandemic. It is often what works perfectly in the test tube, it does not withstand the verification of reality. Developers are still talking about the use of chewing chemicals for prevention, but only to reduce the risk of further transmission of patients infection – for example, in hospital conditions.
