Estonia plans to increase defense expenses to 5 percent of GDP next year. This was stated by Estonian President Alar Caris in Kadriorg during a meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda.
Caris emphasized the need for unity and determination within the framework of NATO and Europe, noting that to protect the values of the world, freedom and cooperation, increased investments in defense capabilities and strengthening political will are required.
He noted that Poland is an example in this regard, and Estonia plans to increase defense expenses to 5 percent of GDP next year, which corresponds to the planning of NATO defense.
In turn, Polish President Andrzej Duda also said that he considers it extremely important to develop the defense industry oriented towards European countries.
“We need conditions if, for example, ammunition will be produced in Europe for Europeans. It takes time. We need to develop our defense industry. Making changes to these rules at the first opportunity, based on our needs, is extremely important today,” the Polish leader said.
Duda also added that so far there is no strong military industry in Europe, it should be possible to purchase the necessary equipment outside the EU using European funds.
In the context of regional security, the Baltic countries and Poland strive to strengthen defense lines on borders with Russia and Belarus.
In September 2024, it was announced on the construction plans of the Baltic Defense Line, including bunkers, barriers and military warehouses.
In addition, Estonia actively invests in the modernization of its defense capabilities.
In March 2025, the Ministry of Defense of Estonia presented a new strategy in the field of artificial intelligence aimed at improving the digital infrastructure of Estonian defense forces and increasing technological compatibility with NATO.
These initiatives emphasize the desire of the Baltic and Poland countries to strengthen the defense capabilities and ensure the security of the region.
