Alar Caris: Ukraine Needs Security Guarantees During Ceasefire

Ukraine also needs security guarantees during the ceasefire, this should allow negotiations on a constant peace agreement. This was stated by Estonian President Alar Caris in an interview with the American news channel CNN.

“It is very difficult to maintain even a monthly ceasefire, if there are no security guarantees. We need security guarantees for Ukraine. That’s why they should be part of the plan, otherwise it will not work,” said Caris, referring to the peaceful plan, which the leaders of the UK and France are preparing.

The head of the Baltic country admitted that the peace process is still at the very beginning, so the disagreements that have arisen are quite understandable.

The USA cannot withdraw its troops from Europe

In addition, the President of Estonia emphasized the importance of maintaining transatlantic ties and expressed the opinion that the United States will not leave Europe, since this is not much of the parties.

“I have already talked about a transatlantic connection, which has been formed for decades, and therefore I do not believe that it can be broken in a few days or weeks,” he said.

Estonia plans to increase defense costs to 5 percent

Speaking about Caris defense costs, Estonia is already spending 3.4 percent of its GDP defense and plans to increase expenses to 5 percent in the coming years.

In addition, the leader of the country emphasized that the Baltic supported Ukraine before the escalation of the war in 2022, and also added that Estonia, together with its allies, plans to put ammunition in the amount of more than 200 million euros.
