Donald Trump’s return to the White House caused serious damage to relations between the USA and Europe. His statements about converging by Russia and NATO weakening undermine confidence in Washington, especially in Germany and France. Trump’s threats cause additional voltage to introduce duties against the European Union, as well as its indirect support for ultra -right movements, which enhances political polarization in Europe.

Publishing polls confirm these fears. According to one of them, 78% of the British, 74% of Germans and 69% of the French consider Trump a threat to their countries. In addition, 85%of Germans see a reliable partner in France, for the UK this figure is 78%, and for the United States – only 16%.

, in the context of a possible weakening of American military support, Europe is preparing to independently strengthen defense capabilities. The European Commission allocates 150 billion euros to the defense sector, including the development of air defense, where the EU has traditionally depended on the United States.

Europe is consolidated before the challenges of Trump

Donald Trump’s policy influenced domestic political processes in Europe, accelerating the strategic rapprochement between the EU and the UK after Brexit. The restoration of the solid partnership of London, Paris and Berlin seems to be more likely, and new mechanisms, such as the European Defense Fund, can contribute to the EU more independence in the field of security. The possible participation of Great Britain in this fund will be an important step towards strengthening the defense integration of Europe.

Meanwhile, the countries of Eastern Europe, especially Poland and the Baltic states, are increasingly feeling a threat from Russia against the backdrop of events in Ukraine. The geographical proximity to the potential zone of conflict enhances their concern, which leads to the adjustment of defense policy. Trump’s skeptical attitude to NATO and his calls to the greater independence of Europe in security matters only deepen the alarm in Warsaw and the capitals of the Baltic states.
