The American agency Associated Press (AP) said that it would not use the name “American Bay” in its publications as part of the Decree of the President of the United States Donald Trump on the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. This is stated in the message of Amanda Barrett, Vice President Ap.
Barrett noted that Trump’s decree applies to the United States, but not to Mexico or other international organizations.
“The Gulf of Mexico has been bearing this name for more than 400 years. AP will continue to call it the original name, recognizing the new name chosen by Trump,” the message said.
Barrett indicated that AP is a global information agency that distributes news around the world, in connection with which it should ensure that the names of places and geographical objects are easily recognized by any audience.
At the same time, Barrett said that Trump decided to rename Mount Denali in Alaska in McCinley.
“This region is exclusively in the United States, and as President Trump has the authority to change the federal geographical names within the country,” she said.
In 2015, former US President Barack Obama renamed Mount McCinley, who was named after the former president, to the denali, the name used by the indigenous Americans.
Trump ordered to rename the Gulf of Mexico immediately after taking office.
