In the Atiko River Valley on the southern coast of Peru, archaeologists found an ancient mass burial, in which the remains of 24 people, probably in battles, rest. It is reported by livescience.
Excavations were carried out by archaeologist Joseph Shikulsky from the University of Wroclaw (Poland) and his team in the alleged settlement of culture Chukibambim or Aruni, which existed from 1000 to 1450 BC. e., before and after the Spanish conquest.
Researchers note that the information about the Aruni ethnic group is extremely scarce. The main sources of information about them still were petroglyphs – images carved on the walls of the caves.
During the excavations that began in October 2024 in the Ali-Khuck area, archaeologists discovered a mass burial in which the remains of women, men and children were located. Nearby were found ceramics, fragments of fabrics, cobs of corn and guns.
Judging by the injuries on the bones, the dead participated in fierce clashes. At the same time, the presence of funeral equipment and the wrapping of bodies in the fabric may indicate that these people were warriors awarded honors from the winning side.
Work will last until the end of April. Scientists plan to conduct DNA analysis and apply more complex methods of study of the found artifacts.
