Area Of Arctic Ocean Decreases, And Atlantic Is Growing

Sea ice area in the Arctic and Antarctic continues to contract due to global climate change.

The head of the 4th Arctic expedition of Turkey Ersan Bashar, in an interview with the correspondent of the Anadolu agency, noted that in the polar regions the consequences of global warming are manifested most intensively.

“Warm water currents heading to the North Pole, primarily under the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, reach the Arctic Ocean. Here is a zone that acts like a pump that converts water in all oceans of the world,” he said.

The agency’s interlocutor recalled a study conducted by Gerland and his colleagues at the Norwegian Polar Institute in 2023. According to its results, the Arctic was subjected to “Atlantification” under the influence of the water of the Atlantic Ocean. “The consequences of this were also recorded in the study we conducted,” he said.

According to Bashar, that the balance in the Arctic region is violated. “In fact, the entire global stream of water is changing, the flow in the oceans and the drain regime. Recently, the formation of sea ice is blocked due to a change in the climate, primarily with an increase in the amount of water, coming from the Atlantic to the Arctic, melting glaciers in the Arctic and the effects of Albedo.
