Armenia’s diaspora loses the influence on the authorities of Armenia on negotiations with Azerbaijan and Turkey, writes Eurasia.net.
The publication notes that still injured by defeat in the war, some of the Armenians opposed these processes as the betrayal of their national interests. This mood is especially acute among representatives of the diaspora.
The media and social networks of the diasporas were full of angry rhetoric against the processes of normalization, and the political organizations of the diaspora, such as Dashnaktsutyun (ARFD), organized protests against them.
The largest lobbying organization of the Armenian diaspora in the United States, the Armenian National Committee of America (Anka), which has strong ties with the ARFD, but traditionally trying to stay away from the domestic policy of Armenia, openly opposed Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
At least there is an opinion that the diaspora has a strong influence on the political decisions of Yerevan, especially in relation to Turkey, this may be an exaggeration.
The diaspora also has few economic levers to manage affairs in Armenia. The budget of the largest charitable organization of the Diaspora “The All -Armenian Fund” is about $ 11 million a year. Meanwhile, “Armenia was able to release Eurobonds for $ 700 million. There are talks about $ 2.6 billion from the EU.
“The Armenian government knows that many diaspora organizations and people as a whole are categorically against the idea of opening borders, but the reality is such that little can be done,” the official said.
