Azerbaijan notes 31th anniversary of introduction to circulation

Azerbaijan celebrates the 31st anniversary of the introduction of the national currency – Azerbaijani manat.

After Azerbaijan’s restoration in 1991, in 1991, the post of president Abulfaz Elchibey at that time, on the release of the National Currency “on July 15, 1992, was laid down the basis of the creation of the Azerbaijani manat.

In August 1992, bills of 1, 10 and 250 manat were put into circulation, in November – coins with a face value of 5, 10, 20 and 50 gyapiks, in December – bills of 5 manat, and in March 1993 – bills of 50 , 100, 500 and 1,000 manat.

The first money of Azerbaijan was printed by the Central Bank of France, Eldar Mikailzade became the author of Manat’s sketches.

From August 1992 to January 1994, both manat and rubles were in circulation.

by decree of the ex-president of Heydar Aliyev on December 11, 1993, Azerbaijan left the ruble zone. Thus, the National Bank of Azerbaijan began to implement independent monetary and course policy.

On February 7, 2005, President Ilham Aliyev signed a decree on the denomination of the national currency. New currencies were put into circulation from January 1, 2006, during the year old and new money turned in parallel.

Business marks 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 manat and coins with a face value 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50 gyapiks were introduced into circulation.

Today’s AZN has four levels of security, the test of the last of which is available only to specialists of the Central Bank of the country.

The design of the new manat was performed by the designer of the Austrian company OEBS, the author of Euro Robert Kalina. The monetary signs of the new generation are printed with the technical support of the National Bank of Switzerland.
