Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry: Baku Notified Washington About Cessation Of USAID Activities In Country

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan noted that Baku notified Washington about the termination of the US agency for international development (USAID).

This was in response to a request by APA said the press secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic Ayhan Gadjizade.

“Notification that USAID does not have a legal basis for activities in the country and stops its activities officially directed by the American side,” he said.

Note, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan Jajun Bayramov at a joint press conference with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Maku Bochorishvili said that the de jure since June 1, 2024 had no legal grounds for activities in Azerbaijan. “It’s time to stop their activities. There is no need for the subsequent presence and representative office of USAID in Azerbaijan, and the moment has already come for the complete cessation of their activities,” he said.

US President Donald Trump on January 21, immediately after taking office, signed a decree on the revision of financing foreign programs.

According to the document, all ministries and agencies responsible for international development programs must stop payments to foreign states, as well as conduct a 90-day verification of the compliance of these programs with US foreign policy interests.

January 27, the US State Department announced the suspension of financing all international programs, including USAID.

Earlier, Ilon Musk said that due to his disagreements with the USAID management, some employees were sent on administrative leave, and the official accounts of the agency in social networks were closed.

Later Trump and Musk announced the need to close the USAID agency.
