“While the Armenian government will occupy an uncompromising position based on lies, unfortunately, the Armenian people will be deprived of peace and well-being.” This was stated by the press secretary of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Leila Abdullayev, commenting on the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia on the Sumgath events of 1988.
The representative of the department noted that Baku has repeatedly answered the groundless and false accusations of Yerevan on the events of 1988.
“The bloody events that occurred at the end of February 1988 in Sumgait were deliberate and planned by provocation against Azerbaijan. The USSR Prosecutor General’s Office opened a criminal case in connection with the incident, conducted an investigation and established those perpetrators and their accomplices, and also revealed For a total of 32 victims. We draw the attention of the Armenian Foreign Ministry to the fact that numerous evidence of the Armenians live in Sumgait about Eduard Grigoryan, Armenian by nationality, who led these events, personally killed six people and raped three women of Armenian origin. Grigoryan sentenced by the court 12 years of imprisonment, was transferred to Armenia to serve the sentence, and then released, “L.Abdullayeva noted.
She also stressed that as a result of the trial in connection with the events in Sumgait, 92 people were sentenced to different times of imprisonment, and one – to the death penalty.
“For comparison, I want to note that in the late 80s of the last century there were no measures for those responsible for the death of 217 Azerbaijanis during their violent exile from the areas of compact residence in the Armenian SSR. Armenia, held under the occupation of 20 percent Territories of Azerbaijan for almost 30 years, as part of its aggressive politics made numerous war crimes against humanity, including the Khojaly genocide. However, none of the perpetrators have not been rapidly responsible, “said the representative of the foreign policy department of Azerbaijan.
Leila Abdullayeva reminded the Armenian Foreign Ministry that Azerbaijan put an end to the many years of Armenian military occupation – part of its internationally recognized sovereign territory and provided territorial integrity.
“Instead of using new opportunities for cooperation and building peace, which currently appear in the region with the elimination of the occupation factor, false, unreasonable and hostile statements demonstrate the true intentions of Armenia,” concluded a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
