In memory of the Azerbaijan geologist, Farman Salmanov, who was the first to discover the largest oil and gas field of Russia in Western Siberia, his heritage remains in the city of Surgut. In the city of Surgut of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation, the house in which Farman Salmanov lived during his geological surveys, turned into a museum.
This house, where Salmanov lived from 1957 to 1961, conducting oil searches, also tells the story of the first opening of oil in Western Siberia.
born in 1931 in the village of Morul of the Shamkirsky district of Azerbaijan, Salmanov since childhood was interested in geology, inspired by the mountains around him. He grew up on the stories of his grandfather, exiled to Siberia during Tsarist Russia, and was fascinated by the beauty and secrets of this region.
Having graduated from the Azerbaijani Industrial Institute with a degree in the General Geologist, Salmanov sought to work in Siberia. In 1954, he was sent to Kuzbass for exploration, but he came to the conclusion about the unpromising searches of oil in this region.
insisted on intelligence in the north of Western Siberia
Salmanov, secretly going north to conduct research, periodically engaged in intelligence and proposed researching in the Surgut area, where forestry and fishing developed. However, for a long time he could not convince the highest leadership, and during his activities in this region he even found herself under investigation. Thanks to Salmanov’s perseverance, he was appointed the head of work on the search for oil in Surgut.
Starting the official searches in 1958, Salmanov, despite the skepticism of his colleagues, continued to work hard. Despite the failures of the first years and attempts to remove him from office, he did not stop drilling work.
Opening of the first Siberian oil
March 21, 1961, as a result of Salmanov’s work, the first Siberian oil was discovered at the Megion oil field in the Middle Prosper. Salmanov expressed his triumphal feeling, hugging his colleagues with the words “We won!” ..
A few months later, oil was also obtained from the well at the Ust-Balykskoye field. Salmanov sent a bold telegram to the chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR Nikita Khrushchev: “I found oil. So, Salmanov.” Thus, Salmanov discovered the largest oil and gas field of Western Siberia.
