The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan condemned the act of desecration of the Qur’an during the campaign in Stockholm. This was reported on the Foreign Ministry page on Twitter.
“Islamofobic actions, such as an open crime on the basis of hatred, are not an expression of freedom of speech. We urge the Sweden government to prosecute persons who committed this crime,” the publication says.
On January 21, the Stockholm authorities allowed to hold a protest of the Turkish Embassy, during which the Qur’an was defiantly burned. Ankara condemned the holding of the action and called it the “open violation” of the Memorandum about joining NATO. Turkey against this background canceled the visit of the Minister of Defense of Sweden. Stockholm, in turn, said that he does not support Islamophobia, but the country has a “wide freedom of opinion.” The Prime Minister of Sweden said that “freedom of speech is a fundamental part of democracy. But what is legally, not necessarily appropriate. The burning of the sacred for many books is an act of deep disrespect. I want to express sympathy for all Muslims, offended by what happened today in Stockholm.”
