The statements voiced by the Armenian Foreign Ministry against Azerbaijan in a statement of February 27 on Sumgait events are not only completely unfounded, but also distortion and falsification of historical facts.
This was said by the press secretary of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Ayhan Gadjizade, commenting on the statement of the Armenian Foreign Ministry about Sumgait events.
“This statement is an attempt to hide the acts of violence, the mass exile of the Azerbaijani population from Armenia, terror against the Azerbaijani people, the provocation and the use of military force on the ethnicity for the implementation of unreasonable and illegal territorial claims of Armenia to Azerbaijan, presented from the late 1980s,” noted. Diplomat.
Azerbaijani representative indicated that “ethnic unrest in Sumgait were an integral part of the targeted and planned provocation of the leadership of the USSR and Armenia, Armenian ideologists-chauinists and extremist organizations.
According to him, the fact that among the victims of the incident were 6 Azerbaijanis proves that these riots were not carried out by the Azerbaijani population.
“We bring to the attention of the Armenia Foreign Ministry that a person who provoked incidents and headed the procession personally, having personally killed 6 people and raped 3 Armenian women, was an ethnic Armenian named Eduard Grigoryan. Numerous evidence of the Armenians living in Sumgait confirmed this information, sentenced by a court decision to 12 years imprisonment, was transported to Armenia for serving a sentence and later released from prison, ”Gadzizade said.
“The Armenian side, instead of assigning accusations that it was supposedly against the Armenians in 2023, it would be more useful to look at the criminal acts committed against Azerbaijani heritage not only in the territory of present -day Armenia, but also during the period of occupation,” the foreign service said in a statement of foreign policy departments.
