US President Joe Biden told the Prime Minister of India Nardenre Modi that the purchase of more oil from Russia does not meet the interests of India and can harm the US response to war in Ukraine, reports Reuters.
During the hour video call on Monday, April 11, which US officials called “warm” and “frank”, Biden and Modi publicly expressed concern about the situation in Ukraine.
“The position of India in the world will not improve if it is relying on Russian energy. The president very clearly made it clear that the increase in this is not in their interests,” said the official representative of the White House Jen Psaka, commenting on the conversation of two leaders.
Psaki did not report whether India had any obligations to import energy resources, but stated that Washington was ready to help the country to diversify energy sources.
The official representative of the United States indicated that the United States did not ask India to do something concrete, but added that “India will make his own judgments after a very frank conversation.”
