US President Joe Biden signed the law, according to which June 19 will be celebrated as a national holiday in honor of the abolition of slavery, reports CNN.
Commenting on the signing of the law, Biden stated that “the great powers do not ignore the most painful moments of its history, but accept them.”
Previously, for this decision, both chambers of Congress voted: the Senate took it unanimously, the House of Representatives – 415 votes against 14.
New holiday became the 11th annually celebrated by the federal holiday in the United States.
