Borrel: Europe Should Be Prepared For Geopolitical Realities With Advent Of Trump

Europe should be prepared for geopolitical realities and develop its own defense policy with the advent of the elected US President Donald Trump. This was stated by the Supreme Representative of the European Union (EU) on foreign affairs and security policy Josep Borrel at a hearing in the European Parliament on the relations of the EU and the USA against the backdrop of elections in the United States.

Borrel pointed out that the changes in the United States will influence global dynamics and this situation will lead to significant changes in the relationship between Washington and Brussels.

“I can’t make assumptions about what steps President Trump will take. All I can say is what we need to be prepared for what can happen and remain calm and vigilance,” the head said European diplomacy.

“Trump re -election should become a clear demonstration that we must strengthen our security and take our fate into our own hands,” he stressed.

Borrel also touched on the topic of support for Ukraine, which may undergo changes with the advent of the Trump administration.

He noted that Europe must fulfill its obligations in relation to Ukraine and in any situation to help further, including at the expense of income from frozen Russian assets.

According to the head of the European Diplomacy, the EU should not remain only an economic union, which depends on NATO in terms of defense.

Instead, according to him, the EU should strengthen its “strategic compass”, take on a military role that complements NATO, and form conditions for Europe to protect its own interests in the field of security.

“EU is not only an economic union, it is also a political union, and we also have responsibilities in the field of defense. And we are talking not only about the production of weapons and ammunition,” Borrel said.

According to him, the EU cannot always rely on “attracting third -party artists.” “I think this is what we should do against the chosen President of Trump,” he concluded.
