The Supreme Representative of the European Union (EU) on foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrel, emphasized that Turkey is a candidate country. He expressed the hope that the participation of the Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in an informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers will help to overcome complex issues in bilateral relations.
Borrel expressed his opinion based on the results of an informal meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels, to which Turkey was invited after 5 years.
Having stated that at a meeting with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, the geopolitical situation in the nearest geography and abroad was discussed in detail, Borrell said: “We examined the issues that complicate our relations, especially the situation in Cyprus and some problems related to the situation in the Middle East, but especially the situation in Cyprus, which is referred to by many member countries. “
The diplomat further said: “Let’s hope that the invitation of the Turkish Foreign Minister to our meeting will be the first step to renew the dialogue process to search for all problems, especially Cyprus.”
answering the question, Borrell said that the schedule of the process of Turkey’s entry into the EU was not discussed, adding: “Turkey is a Candidate country and will remain like that.”
In his speech after the meeting, Minister Fidan noted that Turkey seeks to move forward in relations with the EU on a positive agenda, and emphasized that the EU positive approach, not related to the Cyprus issue, will serve as general interests.
