Borrel: War in Ukraine will drag on

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, assured that sanctions against Russia are working, but it takes time to achieve a full -scale effect. According to him, the war in Ukraine will last a long time, so the countries of Europe need to show “strategic patience.”

According to the Bo -Roof, the actions of Russian President Vladimir Putin have never been due to economic considerations. He said that Putin believes in the “magical power of political voluntarism”, but this cannot last forever.

“Therefore, Europe should show strategic patience. The war will continue, the strength will continue. We have no other choice. To allow Russia to prevail – means to allow it to destroy our democracy and the very basis of the international world order based on the rules,” – wrote the head of European diplomacy on his blog.

Josep Borrel admitted that Europe faced serious difficulties due to the fact that, against the background of anti-Russian sanctions, Russian energy carriers have risen in price.

“Of course, such a quick“ detoxification ”from Russian energy carriers entails significant costs for a number of countries and sectors that we will have to face. However, this is the price that we must pay for the protection of our democracies and international law,”- He said.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the European Union has adopted six packages of sanctions against Moscow and completes work on the seventh. It should include an embargo on Russian gold. The introduced restrictions affect about 1,200 Russian individuals and almost 100 legal entities, as well as a significant number of sectors of the Russian economy.
