Head of the Bundestag Committee of the Federal Republic of Germany for Climate and Energy Claus Ernst in a conversation with RBC made it possible to pay gas supplies from Russia in rubles, however, according to him, this would mean a violation of the restrictive measures of the European Union against the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.
German politician explained that in such a situation Berlin would have to violate FRG sanctions against Moscow, RIA Novosti writes.
“Germany would have to receive rubles from the Russian Central Bank and thereby bypass their own sanctions,” said Ernst.
Parliamentarians suggested that the obligation of gas payments in Russian currency may be a violation of existing bilateral supply contracts. At the same time, he stressed that the freezing of Russian assets abroad would also be considered as a contradiction to these agreements.
“The problem is that the debate on the cessation of energy supply from Russia begins again,” concluded a member of the Bundestag.
