This year, four Canadians accused of drug trafficking were executed in China. This was announced by Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie.
Jolie, emphasized that Canada “strongly condemns” death sentences issued by the Beijing administration.
“I personally asked for their pardon. They all had dual citizenship,” she said.
Jolie said that the executed families asked the government to maintain the confidentiality of their personalities.
Canada’s Foreign Ministry also reported that the verdict of Canadian Robert Schellenberg, sentenced to death for drug trafficking in 2019, has not yet been executed.
Meanwhile, the representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, said that the fight against crimes related to drugs is a common duty of all countries, and called on Canada to “respect the rule of law and stop interfering in the Chinese judicial sovereignty.”
“China has always applied severe punishments for crimes related to drugs, and adheres to the position of” zero tolerance “to the drug problem,- follows from the statement.
In an application sent to Anadolu, the representative of the Canadian Foreign Ministry Charlotte McLeod announced a decisive condemnation of China for the application of the death penalty, and also emphasized that this is an irreversible practice that offends human dignity.
“We can confirm that we have information that at the beginning of this year several Canadian citizens were executed in China,” said McLeod.
It is reported that in China more people are executed every year than in all countries where the death penalty is used.
