Canadians Cancel Trips To United States Due To Customs Duties

Canadians began to revise their plans for trips to the United States and cancel travels due to Donald Trump’s customs duties against Ottawa.

According to The Canadian Press (CP), the new duties introduced by the United States caused a wave of patriotism in Canada and prompted many residents of the country to look for alternative directions for relaxation, such as Europe and the Caribbean region.

According to one of the largest tourist companies “Flight Centre Travel Group Canada”, the number of booking in the United States in February decreased by 40 percent compared to the same month of 2024.

In addition, every fifth Canadian tourist in the past three months has abandoned a trip to the United States.

President of the insurance company “Travel Secure Inc.” Martin Fayerstone noted that antipathy to Trump’s policy had a significant impact on the adoption of such decisions.

“People say they do not want to travel to the United States. Many are not going to support the country that is doing this to us,” he stressed.

Customs duties against Canada and Mexico

US President Donald Trump on February 1 signed a decree on the introduction of additional 25 percent duties on the import of goods from Canada and Mexico, as well as 10 percent tariffs for products from China.

At the same time, a reduced rate of 10 percent was installed for Canadian energy resources. New tariffs entered into force on February 4.

However, on February 3, Trump announced the suspension of the introduction of duties for a period of a month if Canada and Mexico take measures to strengthen border security.

after this period, 25 percent duties were finally put into effect.

In response to these measures, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the United States to unleash the trade war and announced the introduction of similar duties on the import of goods from the United States in the amount of $ 155 billion.
