The Vilnius court withdrew a civil lawsuit against the former leader of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev, filed by the relatives of four dead as a result of the events of January 13, 1991 in the capital of Lithuania, DELFI reports.
As the representative of the court Aurimas Zhukauskas explained, the case was dismissed in connection with the death of Gorbachev. The transfer of liability in the claim is impossible, since it was presented to a specific person. Within seven days, the court ruling can be appealed.
A lawsuit against Mikhail Gorbachev was filed in 2022. In May, court documents were sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation to transfer to the former president of the USSR. The applicants argued that in 1991 Gorbachev, being the commander in chief of the Armed Forces of the USSR, controlled the army, but did not take proper measures to prevent aggression in Lithuania and thus did not stop an international crime.
