Western countries did not make the final decision on the supply of tanks to Kyiv, primarily because of the position of Germany, the Supreme EU Supreme EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Diario.
“This is a political decision that has not yet been made mainly due to the evasion of Germany,” the politician said, adding that he approves the supply of tanks to Kyiv.
Borrel specified that the EU countries have stopped discussing the supply of combat aircraft to Ukraine and instead now they transfer anti -aircraft guns.
The German authorities have repeatedly refused to supply Ukraine Leopard tanks. Germany will not do it alone, emphasized in Berlin. At the same time, individual European countries, where these tanks are in service, expressed their readiness to transfer them to Kyiv as part of the international coalition. This was done, in particular, Poland and Finland. The representative of the Government of Germany Christian Hofman in response said that the transfer of tanks without the consent of Germany would be illegal, since this is necessary for Berlin.
Scholz explained the refusal to supply tanks with an unwillingness to bring the conflict to the war between Russia and NATO.
