Children Make Up Quarter Of Population Of Turkey

As of the end of 2024, the number of children and adolescents under the age of 17 in Turkey amounted to 21,817,061 people, that is, 25.5% of the country’s population. Such data are given by the Institute of Statistics of Turkey (Tüi̇k) on Friday, April 18.

According to the results of the address system of registration of the population, the population of Turkey at the end of 2024 amounted to 85,664,944 people.

At the same time, 51.3 percent of children and adolescence at the end of last year were boys and 48.7%- girls.

For comparison, according to the UN, in 1970, children made up 48.5% of the Turkish population. In 1990, this indicator decreased to 41.8%.

According to forecasts, in 2030, the children’s population of Turkey will be reduced to 22.1%, in 2040 – to 17.9%, in 2060 – to 16.9%, in 2080 – to 15.2%, and in 2100 – up to 14.5%.

In 2024, the share of children in the total population of 27 EU countries was 17.8%. Among the countries – members of the European Union, the largest share of the children’s population was recorded in Ireland (23%), France (20.8%) and Sweden (20.6%).

It is noted that the share of children in Turkey is 25.5%, which is higher than in any of the countries of the European Union. Thus, despite the fact that the population of Turkey is aging, the children’s population of the country still significantly exceeds the children’s population of the EU countries.
