Chisinau And Athens Discussed Ways To Expand Cooperation In Energy Sector

The Minister of Energy of Moldova Dorin Zhungiyu and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece Tasos Chativasiliu, who was on a visit to Chisinau, discussed the prospects for economic cooperation, paying special attention to the energy sector and the use of the vertical gas transportation corridor, Moldipers reports.

The parties considered the possibilities of interaction both at the state level and among companies in areas such as increasing the energy efficiency of buildings, the development of renewable energy sources and the adaptation of European legislation in the energy sector.

Chativasilu expressed the interest of Greek companies in investments in projects on renewable energy sources in Moldova, and also noted the readiness for cooperation in the field of hydrogen use.

In turn, Zhungiyu thanked the Greek side for supporting the pilot project of the terminal of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Alexander Polyis and expressed interest in the further use of this terminal to diversify natural gas sources in Moldova. In April 2024, the Moldavian company Energocom received the first batch of LNGs delivered to the terminal of Alexanderopolis, and transported gas to the vertical corridor for storage in underground storage facilities in Ukraine.

The Greek official emphasized that the LNG terminal and gas transmission infrastructure play a key role in the geopolitical stability of the region, contributing to the strengthening of its energy security. He also noted that Greece supported the accession of Moldova to the vertical gas corridor along with Ukraine and Slovakia in 2024.
