The scenario of Russia’s attack on NATO countries in the near future is almost impossible in terms of its capabilities, but it is necessary to prepare for such a threat in order to restrain the aggressor.
This was stated by the commander of the Armed Forces of Lithuania Valdemaras Rupshis, reports Lithuanian national radio and television LRT.
However, Rupshis is convinced, “conditions can change”, especially given the possible escalation of conflicts not only in Europe, but also in other parts of the world, therefore it is necessary to strengthen the military potential of Lithuania.
In this context, he attracted attention to the conflict in the Middle East. “When wars begin, it is sometimes impossible to predict how everything will turn out. Therefore, those who say that we need to rush, be pragmatic, concentrate on making the right decisions and prepare for a future conflict, and above all to restrain it due to the combat readiness of our combat power “, – added the commander in chief.
Rupshis emphasized that the army recommends that politicians accelerate the creation of opportunities, providing for the most wide range of weapons.
According to him, the priorities are strengthening combat readiness and military power, equipping the army with combat vehicles and tanks.
This week, the State Defense Council agreed on the purchase of German Leopard 2 tanks for the division created in Lithuania. Also, according to Rupshios, it is necessary to equip the army with small and medium -range air defense systems, “which is done.”
