Conflict In Sudan Entered Third Year

Since April 15, 2023, fierce battles between the army and the quick response forces (SBR) have been continuing in Sudan. The conflict, which began in the capital of Khartom, covered many regions of the country and entered the third year.

These clashes caused the world’s largest crisis in the number of displaced persons. Millions of people faced difficult living conditions. More than 20,000 people died, and the number of dead may exceed 150,000. More than 11 million people were forced to leave their homes, and about 4 million fled to neighboring countries. According to the UN, more than 30 million people, or more than half of the country’s population, need humanitarian assistance.

The army of Sudan on March 26, 2024 returned to its control the presidential palace in Hartum, which for more than two years held the SBP. This step has significantly changed the course of the conflict, but did not marked its end. In recent weeks of SBR, the fascin attacks, the administrative center of the Northern Darfur, which they besiege from May 10, 2024, intensified.

September 26, 2024, the army of Sudan began a land surgery, within the framework of which attacks were carried out in the position of the SBR in Khartom and other cities. During the operation, the army controlled areas in South Sinar, as well as in the central parts of the country, including Jaziru and the White Nile.

SBR, in turn, continued to attack Darfur, controlling four of five regions of the region. In the center of Fashir, where refugee camps are located, the situation remains “terrifying.”

The conflict between the army and the SBR began against the backdrop of disagreements regarding the integration of the SBR into the regular army. In 2023, the SBR began to transfer troops to airports and military bases, which became the reason for the escalation of hostilities.

The international community is concerned about the growth of violence and the continuing destruction of infrastructure in the country. Sudan was faced with serious consequences for his health care, and the medical care system was actually destroyed.

The conflict in Sudan is still ongoing, despite some successes of the army. It is expected that the fighting will continue until the SBR is completely replaced from the country’s territory.
