The costs of education in Turkey in 2023 increased by 92.5 percent compared to 2022 – up to 1 trillion 130 billion 844 million Turkish lire. This is evidenced by the data of the Turkish Institute of Statistics (Tüi̇k).
According to Tüi̇k, the largest increase in education costs falls on the share of primary schools (109 percent) and preschool institutions (107.2 percent).
The ratio of expenses for education to gross domestic product (GDP) in Turkey increased from 3.9 percent in 2022 to 4.3 percent in 2023. The share of state expenses for education in GDP in 2022 amounted to 3.1 percent versus 3.6 percent in 2023. Of the expenses of state educational institutions, 34.4 percent was in higher education and 21.4 percent – for secondary education.
Of the expenses of private educational institutions, 41.4 percent was in higher education, 32.2 percent – for secondary education.
At the same time, 83.5 percent of education expenses in Turkey in 2023 were funded by the state. The share of household expenses in education costs was 7.9 percent.
The largest increase in expenses per student falls on the share of secondary education.
If in 2022 the expenses of education for one student were 25,143 Turkish lira, then in 2023 this figure increased to 49,045 Turkish lire.
The total expenses for the education per student in the period under consideration increased by 95.1 percent compared to the previous year.
