The European Commission offered the European EU countries a deal with Azerbaijan to increase the import of natural gas. This is stated in the draft document published on Reuters.
The project of the Memorandum of understanding that needs the approval of governments can still be changed and is part of the efforts of the European Union to reduce dependence on Russian gas after the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
“The parties strive to maintain bilateral trade in natural gas, including by exporting to the European Union through the Southern Gas Corridor at least 20 billion cubic meters of gas annually,” the document says.
The transdriatic pipeline, which is the final stage of the pipeline network of the southern gas corridor, delivered more than 8 billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas to European countries last year, including Italy.
The project says that both parties will encourage financing for the expansion of this network to increase supplies to Europe. An increase in supplies will also require Azerbaijan to increase gas production.
