Crossing sheep across river – competition with an 850 -year history

In the area of ​​the Chalt Province of Denizley for more than eight centuries, the custom has been living to arrange a competition for the crossing of sheep across the river.

The tradition is included in the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.

The task of shepherds is to transport the sheep painted into various colors of the sheep.

This year, 38 shepherds with their herds took part in the competition.

Their task was to transport sheep called “Elchi” across the Big Menderes River.

The mayor of the capital’s municipality Denizley Osman Zolan, representatives of political parties and others watched the competition.

The winner of the competition was the foin of Akdag, Batuhan Celic took the second place, Khasan Salyk was in third place.
