Western countries do not offer new sanctions against Russia, because more and more countries abandon criticism of Moscow, writes Reuters with reference to UN diplomats.
“Since the war (in Ukraine – Ed.) is delayed, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find reasonable ways to punish Russia,” said Richard Gowen, Director of the UN in an independent international crisis group.
Diplomatic sources claim that the European Union wanted to appoint the UN expert to investigate violations of human rights in Russia. The idea was postponed due to fears that almost half of the members of the UN Council for Human Rights in Geneva could oppose.
“countries ask: is it really so wise to be among those who defeated Russia?” – said Olaf Vincer, director of the Geneva branch of the German Foundation Conrad Adenauer.
In addition, fewer countries want to send additional military assistance to Ukraine, including Germany and France.
A high -ranking diplomat said that Ukraine’s support will weaken because the March resolutions are the highest mark. The countries have no desire to take further actions if red lines such as a chemical or nuclear attack are not crossed.
