The results of the recently held parliamentary elections in the Kurdish regional administration of Iraq (Territory) indicate the likelihood of the formation of a coalition between the Kurdistan democratic party (DPP), which retained its leadership, and the patriotic union of Kurdistan (PSK), which took second place.
According to the voting results, which took place on October 20 after a two -year break, showed that the “new generation movement” and the “Party of the Islamic Union of Kurdistan” (Yekgirta) took third and fourth places, respectively.
After the official announcement of the results of the leading party, it will be 90 days for the formation of the government, and shortly after that, as expected, negotiations on the coalition will begin.
DPK, which receives 39 seats, it is necessary for another 12 mandates to form the ruling majority in the 100-seater parliament of the region.
Preliminary results indicate 23 places for PSK, 15 for a new generation, seven for Yekgirta, three for a group of justice of Kurdistan (Komel), four for the Halvest (Durush) movement, two for the Popular Front and one for Gorane and one at a time Groups of the Kurdistan Alliance.
“New Generation” and Yekkhirta announced that they would not be included in the new government. The parliamentary boycott also announced the komelak due to the alleged falsification in the elections, the confirmation of the fact of which may affect the distribution of places.
The accusations of falsification were made by the Islamic movement of Kurdistan, Durush, Goran and the Popular Front.
The independent Higher Electoral Commission of Iraq considers complaints.
It is expected that the DPC will strive for an alliance with PSK. The coalition, including PSK and five quotas, will give the DPP the majority, and 33 mandates will go to the opposition. Another possible option may include the inclusion of Goran and other smaller parties in the coalition, which will resemble the previous government alliance.
However, the likely opposition of the “new generation”, Yekgirta and Comel will limit the capabilities of the coalition. It is assumed that the DPK and PSK, having a strong influence in their regions, will cooperate to create a stable administration.
After the 2018 election, the coalition included the DPK, PSK, Goran and representatives of the Turkmen and Christian communities, while the “new generation”, Yekkhirta and Komel did not enter the government.
