Economist: real number of dead from Covid-19 is three times higher than official

How many people really died in the world because of the coronavirus epidemic? The answer to this question depends on both the available data and on how we interpret “because of”, writes the British edition of The Economist.

According to the publication, a lot of people infected with the SARS-COV-2 virus dying, without having passed on it. Thus, this is not reflected in general statistics. On the other hand, some of those who hit this statisticians as the deceased from Coronavirus, and so from another disease I had.

Edition is called a question: Do I need to take into account those who died without receiving proper care, because of the lack of space and personnel in hospitals crowded with coronavirus patients? According to the authors of the article, if such deaths take into account in general statistics, it is necessary to subtract those lethal cases that could occur in a normal context, due to influenza or air pollution.

According to the calculations of the British edition, from the beginning of the epidemic from the coronavirus in the world, 15 million people died, although the official figure is about 4.5 million. The article argues that in Israel, official data is just higher than the real number of deaths. “According to our data, there is a 95 percent probability that the real number of deaths from Covid in the world varies from 9.3 to 18.1 million people,” the Economist writes.

In its calculations, the British edition used an existing model that does not share between different causes of death. The authors of the material calculated excess mortality – the number that shows how more people they died from the beginning of the epidemic compared to previous years. According to calculations of the authors of the article, in Asia, the real mortality rate from coronavirus is 700 percent higher than the official one. In Africa – 800 percent.
