The Economic Community of the West African states (Ecowas) gave a military junta that seized power in Niger on July 26, one week to release President Mohammed Bazum and allow him to fulfill his duties.
In the capital of Nigeria Abuja, an extraordinary Ecowas summit took place.
States – members of the economic community of Western Africa (ECOWAS) demanded the rebels to free the president of the country Bazum and suspended all commercial operations with Niger.
This is stated in the statement of the summit of the regional association, convened in connection with the situation in Niger.
According to the statement, the community decided to close the borders for the coup d’etat in the country.
“We announce the ban on trips for participants in the coup in Niger.” Ecowas will also freeze the assets of the military involved in the coup in this country.
The organization called for the release of President Niger Muhammad Bazum, to return him to power and restore the constitutional order in the country.
“We condemn the attempt of a coup and the illegal detention of President Niger and his family members,” said in Ecowas.
“We demand to take the necessary measures to restore the constitutional order in Niger for a week,” follows from the statement.
Ecowas was created in the spring of 1975 by Western Africa countries. Today, the organization unites 15 states of the region. The membership of the three countries where the military has seized power over the past few years – Burkina -Faso, Guinea and Mali – suspended.
