Ecuador authorities declared a 60-day state of emergency and commandant hour after the leader of the largest Ecuadorian gang “Los Choneros” Jose Adolfo Dimensions Williamar escaped from prison.
“I have just announced a state of emergency in the country so that the armed forces received full political and legal support in their actions,” wrote President Ecuador Daniel Noboa in social networks.
Noboa noted that this decision will allow the army in the capture of the fugitive leader of the gang, nicknamed Phoo, and will also ensure internal security in prisons, where riots broke out.
It was reported that Jose Adolfo Dremers Williamar was in prison in the city of Guayakil and fled from there on January 7. Masias served a 34-year term since 2011 for various charges, including drug trafficking and murders.
