Egypt refused to serve the Russian payment system “Mir” due to the risk of secondary sanctions that the West can impose. This was reported by Al-monitor with reference to a source in the National Bank of Egypt.
Six months of the Egyptian Central Bank worked on the establishment of a connection between the Russian Mir with the Egyptian network Meeza. According to the head of the Committee on Budget and Planning of the House of Representatives of Fahri El Fiki, this would contribute to the development of tourism, and also “help Egypt to pay for Russian goods, such as wheat, in rubles, and not in US dollars.”
The financiers decided to abandon these plans after the US treasury warned that banks working with the Mir systems are at risk of suffering for Russia’s support in the round of sanctions imposed after the start of the war in Ukraine. Punishment may include a ban on the use of US dollars.
