Egypt expects payment of compensation in the amount of more than $ 1 billion for almost a weekly blocking of the Suez Channel due to the Ever Given container carrier, the Associated Press Agency reports.
“This is the right of the country,” said the head of the management of the Suez Canal of Osama Raby. He did not specify who exactly should pay compensation, but warned that the container ship and cargo will not allow to leave Egypt, if the question of the damage is transferred to the court.
Agency notes that the process can be difficult, because Ever Given belongs to the Japanese company, serves the Taiwanese shipper and goes under the flag of Panama.
Compensation includes the cost of rescue operation, losses due to suspension of movement and lost transit fees.
