In the Sunik region of Armenia (Zangezur) there was an environmental disaster, as a result of which the city of Kapan is flooded with yellowish-orange waters, Armenian media write.
As Vice-mayor Kafan Marat Harutyunyan stated, the streets have been poured since yesterday, they are currently cleaned and work to establish the reason.
He connects this with the Kafan mine – the shaft of the Cavart, which is closed and not operated.
This happens periodically, there is nothing extraordinary in this, the last time something similar was a few months ago, ”he said.
The problem of the mine has been raising ecologists since 2014. Periodically due to rains, the yellow waters of an abandoned underground mine in the city of Kafan flow streets.
Ecologists argue that acid drainage that is dangerous follows from the mine. It turns out that rain water washed out heavy metals from the mines, and acidic mixtures flow along the streets of Kafan and flow into the nearest river.
