The Estonian government is going to introduce a coastal “adjacent zone” in the Gulf of Finland, which will allow the Russian shipping on it.
The relevant proposal was put forward by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country, and the Cabinet of Ministers at the meeting on January 12 instructed to work it within a month.
The introduction of the “adjacent zone” makes it possible to verify the observance of Estonian legislation within 24 naval miles from the original line of the territorial sea of Estonia, said the head of the Estonian Foreign Ministry Urmas Reinsalu.
According to him, the law of the state in the “adjacent zone” applies to customs and tax issues, as well as to sanitary and immigration rules. The “adjacent zone” would become an additional sea zone controlled by Estonia, said the director of the international law of the Foreign Ministry Christi Land.
