Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevurcan signed a project to initiate state special planning and strategic assessment of the impact on the environment of the defense industry park. This was reported by the press service of the Estonian defense department.
The purpose of the initiative is to enable enterprises of the defense industry to establish the production of ammunition in Estonia.
“European capacities for the production of ammunition still remain at a lower level than it is necessary in the context of a changing situation with safety and conflict in Ukraine. We also want to create prerequisites for the production of ammunition in Estonia, so that our own The forces of defense, so our allies could buy ammunition made in Estonia, ”said Pevour.
The minister noted that a suitable place for defense technology park is currently looking for.
In addition, the Ministry of Defense intends to study the capabilities and feasibility of the production of explosives in Estonia.
“The production of explosives is, in fact, the chemical industry. Probably, this will require much more resources, such as water and energy than for the production of ammunition. There is a serious shortage of explosives production capacities in Europe,” – explained SIRP Indrek, Special Advisor for the Development of the Defense Industry.
The Ministry of Defense noted that the state will develop the necessary basic infrastructure, after which interested companies will be able to come and build their own production. The park will allow ammunition of small, medium and large caliber. The first production of products can begin after 2.5 years.
