The EU reaction to the proposed introduction of US President Donald Trump for new customs duties on goods from the member countries of the community will be tough. This was stated by the chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Lyain.
“The European Union is ready for a thorough and constructive dialogue with the United States, but at the same time realizing potential difficulties in relations with the United States, we are ready for this. The EU will react rigidly to unfair or arbitrary attacks,” the politician said at a meeting of leaders EU on European defense in Brussels.
The head of the European Commission also criticized the decision of the Trump administration on the introduction of high tariffs for goods from Canada and Mexico. “These duties contribute to the growth of business costs, damage to employees and consumers. They cause unnecessary damage to the economy and increase inflation. We do not think that this will lead to any positive results,” said von der Lyayen.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to soon introduce duties on goods imported from the European Union. The President accused the EU authorities of unwillingness to buy American goods and called it a “atrocity.” According to him, while the European Union supplies its own cars in the United States “millions.”
In addition, Trump introduced customs duties of 25 percent for Mexico, 25 percent for Canada and 10 percent for China.
