The Summit of the European Union decided to prohibit Belarusian airlines to carry out flights to the EU airports and fly over the territory of the European Union, and also recommended that European carriers refuse flights in the airspace of Belarus. According to TASS, this is stated in the end of the EU summit on Monday in the evening, which was the answer to the incident with an unplanned landing in Belarus of the aircraft of the budget Irish airline Ryanair.
The decision has not yet entered into force, it should still be coordinated and approved in the EU Council at the level of ministers, which will require from several days to several weeks.
In addition, the summit decided to introduce new sanctions against Belarus.
Next, all the decisions on air traffic with Belarus will be taken by the authorities of the states of the European Union and the airline themselves.
Upon arrival at the Summit, the head of the European Commission of Ursula von der Lyien announced that the European Union intends to adopt new restrictive measures against individuals responsible for landing the aircraft, as well as against state-owned companies and business of this country, “funding regimen”.
According to the existing procedure, the EU countries and foreign policy service of the European Union should be made with proposals for the content of new restrictive measures, and then they must agree and approve the EU Council at the ministerial level, after which the sanctions will take effect.
