the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the freedom of the media in Georgia, which contains the introduction of sanctions against the ex-Prime Minister of Georgia, billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, reported news.
According to information, the resolution was approved today by 308 votes against 218. “We express us concerned with the destructive role that the individual oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili plays in Georgian politics and economics, due to its influence at the level of the government and decision-making, including in the connection of it. with politically motivated persecution of opponents and journalists, ”the Radio Liberty quotes.
The resolution notes “deep concern” with Ivanishvili’s ties with the Kremlin. The authors of the document believe that it is they who determine the position of the current Government of Georgia for sanctions against Russia.
In addition, the resolution includes:
- Criticism of events on July 5, 2021, when in Tbilisi a crowd of radicals beat more than fifty journalists.
- Call to the transfer of the prisoner of the ex-president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili for treatment abroad.
- The verdict to the general director of the opposition television channel Mtavari Nick Gvaray, criminal cases against the owners of the TV channels Pirveli and Formula.
- The decision of the court in the case of the founder of the party “Lelo” Mamuki Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze.
- Concerned political polarization in Georgia.
- Support for European aspirations of the Georgian people. European institutions call for work to ensure that Georgia receives the status of a candidate for EU members.
The resolution was initiated by the largest faction of the European Parliament – the Conservative European People’s Party (UNP). The pro -European political group “Refresh Europe” and European conservatives and reformists have performed co -authors of proposals against Ivanishvili.
