The European Union plans to start a new, long -term mission in Armenia after the expiration of the civil monitoring group, said the Supreme EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel.
According to the Bo -relief, the work that 40 observers in Armenia were effective and “contributed to the strengthening of confidence in an unstable situation.”
“Today we are starting a new stage in the EU involvement in the South Caucasus with a transition team that will prepare the ground for a possible longer EU mission in Armenia, the ultimate goal of which is to promote the sustainable world in the region,” the press service of the European Council quotes the diplomat.
Therefore, he pointed out, the European Council, in agreement with Yerevan, decided that the current mission of EU observers in Georgia would send an interim group of assistance to Armenia in order to increase EU’s awareness of the security situation and contribute to the planning and preparation of a possible civil mission in Armenia. The transition team will also help the head of the European Council Charles Michel with normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
